A division is a large military unit consisting of 10,000 or more soldiers. It consists in turn of several regiments. A division is a combined arms unit and capable of independent operations for an extended period of time.
In ViE, a division is usually formed by "only" about 100 players, later even less (ViE#7 onwards). The division plays a major role in ViE's concept, with divisions from the opposing armies being determined to fight each other. The term "division" is applied even to units who are not - by name - divisions, such as the 3° Reggimento Bersaglieri (actually a regiment) or the 2. Kreuzer-Flottille "Niedersachsen" (a flotilla, the naval equivalent of a division). Thus, the term is used in a much lesser strict meaning than in real militaries. The combined arms aspect is also not really true, as DoD simulates only infantry warfare. Most ViE divisions are, however, divided into smaller units, usually called "squads", but sometimes more accurately described as regiments or companies (though a handful of companies do hardly make up a division, rather, a regiment).

Types
The types of divisions that appear in ViE are only limited by the creativity of the Generals. A division from any country that fought in World War II may appear, and, as pointed out above, it does not even have to be a division-sized unit. More importantly, it does not have to be a real-unit or based on a real unit. As long as the element of fiction is not overused, any military unit one could think of as participating in World War II may be used, from any military branch and any size (from company to corps).

Stats
This section includes various statistics about divisions that appeared in ViE.
Ranking
This is a ranking of all divisions that ever existed in ViE. This is purely for entertainment and does not have any practical or official use.
Ranking by W-D Ratio (Win-Defeat Ratio). When two or more divisions have the same overall W-D Ratio, the attacking W-D ratio decides who is ranked first.
Highest values in each category are marked in bold
Legend
- BP = Battles played
- W = Wins
- D = Defeats
- W:D = Win-Defeat Ratio
- Diff. = Difference between Wins and Defeats
- Camp. = Campaign (wheter the campaign was lost or won - shows how many were won for Armies (e.g. 2 W = 2 Won))
- %W = Percent of Battles won (Battles won divided by Battles played times 100)

Comments
- After over three campaigns, the stats show a clear Axis dominance as well as a clear defender's dominance, with 58 out of 80 defenses being successful yet and 66.25% of all battles (roughly two-thirds) having been won by Axis units.
- After 80 battles, the chance to win a defense appears to be 72.5%. The chance to win an attack is 27.5%, by contrast. If the winning percentages of both armies are added and then divided by two (thus calculating the arithmetic median of these figures), the values are 71.4% and 28.6% respectively.
- The A10MD was the first division to catapult itself to the first place right after their first battleday.
- After 116 battles, the chance to win a defense appears to be at 71.5%, not having changed much sine the last two evaluations above. Thus, ViE is still clearly biased toward the defender. The Axis bias has decreased notably though, the Axis won "only" 58.6% of all battles, a value much closer to the "fair" value of 50% then it was after 80 battles (66.25%).
Avatars
Ever since BFE#2, divisions in BFE/ViE have divisional avatars which are heavily used in the forums. Currently players can select in their profile to display their divisional avatars, and most players do so.
The divisional avatars are often made by members or officers of the respective division and mostly fictional, although some are based on real insignia (that is often the case when the division is also based on a real unit).
Either the division's General selects the avatar or lets his soldiers vote on it, as it happened in the 2-KF for example.
Starting in ViE#8, divisional avatars and rank avatars were often combined into a single graphic (see US Infantry ranks for example).
The following presents an overview about all avatars used in ViE so far.
