General is a widespread name for the highest military rank. In ViE, General is the term almost always used for the highest leader of a division and the highest field-commander in the game. Generals are selected by the CinC before the campaign starts and have the power to decide the nationality, structure, ranks and insignia of the division they are going to command. They enjoy the largest power (along with the CinC) given to any non-Admin in the tournament, but also carry most of the responsibility within their army.
The term General is often used in ViE as name for the commander of a division, regardless of the exact title (such as Admiral in naval divisions) or for translations of the word "General" in other languages for non-English or -German divisions.
In some divisions, notably the PPCLI, several General ranks are used, with the lower ones reserved for the most Senior Officers. The divisional commander is then the highest of these Generals (practically his rank is called General in most rank systems, while lower Generals have prefixes to their names).

Position within the Chain of Command
General is classified as OF-9 in the NATO System and Level 20 in Ewok's rank classification system. The next lower rank is Generalmajor on the Axis side and Major General or Lieutenant General on the Allied side. The next higher rank is the respective CinC rank on both sides.

Any ViE player can be appointed to General by a CinC, although the normal way to reach this rank is to work your way up through the CO Career Path. It usually takes many campaigns to reach the rank.

Allied Generals
The rank is used in many variations but usually just called General. In ViE#1, 2, 3 and ViE#6, the Allied General was a Major General to be exact. In ViE#4, a Lieutenant General took over the General functions.
The Allied tag for General has almost always been Gen., that can be traced back to the early campaigns of BFE.

Axis Generals
The rank is spelled in exactly the same way in German, only the pronounciation is different.
The Axis General tag has always been ***, this can be traced back to BFE#2 when rank tags were first used.
